I'm Carl, Head of Commercial Strategy at Hotel Trader. My focus is on the economics of distribution - where value is being created, where it's leaking, and how Hotels and Travel Buyers can strategically partner using the right data signals.
Hotel Trader's mission is to transform how hotel distribution works by removing the complexity that sits between Hotels and Travel Buyers. We've built what we call an Exchange, a self-regulating, direct network, and my role is to make sure we best service our partners and drive measurable performance.
The challenge is that most Hotels still can't answer two basic commercial questions with confidence - who is actually selling your inventory, and what levers create a positive ROI. Without that visibility, rate integrity becomes guesswork and every channel decision is made partially blind.
The opportunity is in the intelligence layer. Once a Hotel can see the DNA of Travel Buyers – their average booking value, lead times, length of stay, cancellation rates, and other booking patterns and behavior - distribution stops being a defensive exercise and becomes genuinely strategic, signalling where to lean in and invest resources.
The same applies on the buy side. Travel Buyers who can access pricing and market intelligence, by working directly with hotels to identify opportunities to engage with customers and influence demand, become invaluable.
It's shifting from a relationship based on access to one based on accountability. For years, the value proposition from technology providers was simply "we can connect you." That's no longer sufficient. Hotels and Travel Buyers now expect partners to demonstrate performance, not just facilitate a transaction.
That means real-time data insights, recommendation engines, and self-serve solutions that provide users agency. In the highly dynamic environment of hotel distribution there are many failure points – and technology providers will be held to a much higher standard for resolving issues and creating performance.
In the gap between cost and value, which most of the industry still measures poorly. A lot of distribution decisions are still made on rate alone, without factoring in the operational cost of a fragile integration, the resourcing burden of managing dozens of disconnected partner relationships, or the rate leakage that comes from a lack of oversight.
The untapped opportunity for both Hotels and Travel Buyers is in making distribution decisions based on full economics, not just headline rate. That requires data that's actually accessible and usable, not buried in a system nobody has time to interrogate.
Our priority is making sure both sides of The Exchange, Hotels and Travel Buyers, can see and act on performance data with minimal friction. We want to empower our partners with new innovative solutions and continue to be in discovery around how we can best serve this industry using the latest technology.
